Everton’s hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League have suffered a huge blow with the news that influential midfielder, Tim Cahill, has been ruled out of the rest of the season with a broken metatarsal.

The 28-year-old Australian lasted just 10 minutes against West Ham last Saturday after suffering a recurrence of an old foot injury.

Cahill aggravated an injury he originally sustained against Sheffield United last season.

The news is a major blow to Everton’s hopes of beating local rivals Liverpool to the final Champions League place. The two sides meet on Sunday with Liverpool currently lying in fourth spot, two points ahead of the Toffees.

“I think it’s obvious that he will be out for the rest of the season,” Everton boss David Moyes told the club’s official website.
