Real Madrid coach Fabio Capello has signled out David Beckham for criticism following Real Madrid’s 1-0 home defeat to Levante – even though the former England captain was watching the match from the stands.

A seventh league defeat of the campaign left Real five points behind leaders Barcelona and facing the prospect of a fourth successive season without a trophy.

Capello has refused to select Beckham since the midfielder announced his intention to leave the club and join LA Galaxy at the end of the season.

“Beckham doesn’t do anything for me. In the three years he has been here the results haven’t been that good. Now we are trying a new way of doing things,” said Capello.

Many supporters waved white handkerchiefs and demanded the resignation of Capello and chairman Ramon Calderon during the game.

Calderon and sporting director Pedja Mijatovic held crisis talks after the game, while Capello denied his position was under threat.

“I am not thinking about resigning. I want to see out my contract,” Capello insisted, adding he was convinced the club can still “win something this season.”
