Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas is looking for assurances over his first team place before agreeing to sign a new deal with the club.

The Spanish international has 18 months to run on his current deal and the club are looking to tie him down to a new long-term contract.

“I want to renew my contract and I hope to continue at Real Madrid. I am a Madrid fan and have been here for eight years,” Casillas told Spanish daily ABC.

“The club have to call on me to begin negotiations and I don’t think there will be any problem with that happening.

Real have been linked with a move for Juventus’ Gianluigi Buffon – a keeper regarded by many as the best in the world. Rumours of a move for Buffon have proved mildly disconcerting for Casillas.

“However, it is true that if they are thinking of signing Buffon, I would like to know that before renewing,” he added.

“It’s normal for Madrid to look at other players, but I am not closing any doors, because the law of football doesn’t allow you to.”

The 23-year-old has denied that the speculation about his future will affect his form.

“I am not worried, as I have confidence in my work, I have no problems about what could happen,” added Casillas.

“I am not losing sleep.”
