Catania have lodged an appeal against their 2-0 defeat against Internazionale on Sunday, after the Italian league leaders included Marco Materazzi in their starting line-up.
The World Cup winning defender pulled out of Italy’s friendly clash with Portugal last week – but he then played for Inter just a few days later, and that is against league rules in Italy.
Now Catania have lodged an official protest.
“There’s a rule and it should apply to everyone,” Catania sporting director Pietro Lo Monaco told Radio Radio.
“We have a player, Juan Vargas, and he was injured before and still had to travel to the Peruvian camp.
“He didn’t play and came back fine, but we couldn’t field him in our next game against Torino.”
