PSV Eindhoven 1 – 0 Schalke 04

Jan Venegoor of Hesslink scored the only goal of a largely uneventful game as Dutch Champions PSV Eindhoven overcame Schalke of Germany 1 – 0.

Prior to the 33rd minute strike, the hosts – who were without some key players including their Brazilian defender Alex – could only muster a couple of relatively spurious efforts on goal.

The first, a long range drive from Timmy Simmons, was thwarted by Schalke keeper Frank Rost, before debutante Ibrahim Affellay scuppered the opportunity to make a name for himself, sliding his shot nonchalantly into the goalie’s hands after collecting DeMarcus Beasley’s wonderfully weighted through ball.

Schalke looked the more purposeful team after the break, and came close to scoring when Altintop’s effort was, somewhat inexpertly, shepherded away by Gomez in the PSV goal. However, it wasn’t enough to bridge the deficit, and Gus Hiddink’s side held out for a victory which very much pleased their coach.

“This is a great start”, he said. “Aalthough we had to make alot of changes to the side, we showed good tactical discipline and were particularly well organized in defence … I would like to compliment my players on their display tonight”.
