Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has denied reports that he is planning to launch a bid for Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard.

The Liverpool captain has been constantly linked with a move away from Anfield with Chelsea the club most frequently linked with him.

The Premiership club are understood to have made a bid for Gerrard in the summer – but he chose to stay at Liverpool and Mourinho insists there will be no approach when the transfer window opens in January.

When asked whether he would like to bring Gerrard in, Mourinho replied: “No.

“He is a player I admire very much. I think Liverpool are lucky to have such a fantastic player.

“In the open market in January, if we only have small injuries like that to Robert Huth, if we don’t have big injuries, the market can be open but it is closed for us.

“So I don’t think about players. The summer is too far ahead to think about.”
