Sunderland striker Djibril Cisse has been arrested on suspicion of common assault following an incident outside a bar in the early hours of Monday morning.

Cisse was subsequently released on police bail.

It is understood the alleged assault took place at around 3am outside the Diamonds club on Grey Street between Cisse, 27, and an unnamed woman.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “A 27-year-old man was arrested for common assault at around 3am on Monday in Grey Street, Newcastle.

“He has been bailed pending further inquiries.”

However, Cisse’s spokesperson insists the French international voluntarily handed himself into Northumbria police and has vowed to clear his name.

“Djibril categorically denies any assault,” said the spokesperson, who also claimed that Cisse had not been inside the club, nor had he been drinking, and was on his way past the Diamonds bar when the alleged fracas took place.
