Arsenal defender Ashley Cole’s proposed move to Chelsea looks to be in danger of collapsing.

Cole’s move has stalled because the two clubs have been unable to agree a fee for the England international.

It has been reported that Arsenal have been looking for as much as £30m for Cole – while Chelsea are refusing to pay more than £20m.

Cole, who has not played for Arsenal this season, played for the reserves against Charlton on Monday – an indication perhaps that Gunners boss Arsene Wenger could soon reintroduce the player back into his first team squad.

Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood hopes Cole will commit himself to the club if the deal falls through before Thursday’s transfer deadline.

“He is a very good player and if he is going to stay I hope his attitude is right.

“If he is going to be miserable and sour there is no point. Hopefully he will get his head right,” he told the Daily Star.

Hill-Wood described the ongoing transfer wrangle as “ridiculous”, admitting that he does not know whether Cole’s move to Chelsea could happen in January.

“I don’t know is the answer,” he added. “It’s rather ridiculous really. I have no idea.”

The player was fined, along with Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, in June 2005 for meeting in a London hotel without Arsenal’s permission.
