Newly-appointed Borussia Dortmund coach Thomas Doll said his job is to boost his players’ confidence and guide the club away from the relegation zone.

Doll is back back in work after his dismissal by Hamburg in February and replaces Juergen Roeber, who resigned as coach on Monday following his side’s 2-0 defeat at Bochum last weekend.

Doll’s principal task is to steer the club away from the relegation zone with his side placed just one defeat and two points clear of the bottom three.

“This team, with its internationals, its experienced players and young talent coming through, undoubtedly has the potential to get out of its current situation,” said Doll.

“We have to make the players believe in themselves and give them back their missing confidence.

“We can talk about the quality of players and their injuries, but the big question is the mentality of some players,” said Roeber.

“After the defeat to Bochum I realised that not everyone in this team has fully grasped the seriousness of the situation.”

Doll is Dortmund’s third coach this season, after Roeber and Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk.
