Thomas Doll has resigned as coach of Borussia Dortmund after the side finished a disappointing 13th in the Bundesliga.

Dortmund said Doll had offered his resignation on Monday after a meeting with club executive Hans-Joachim Watzke and sporting director Michael Zorc.

Doll was installed as coach 14 months ago and led Dortmund into the German Cup final, where they were beaten by Bayern Munich.

“What will stay behind is Thomas Doll’s work in keeping us in the Bundesliga and qualifying for the UEFA Cup through reaching the German Cup final,” said Watzke in a statement.
