United States international Landon Donovan says his loan spell with Everton exceeded all expectations.

Donovan, 28, who joined Everton in January on a 10-week deal, is set to play his final game for Everton at Birmingham on Saturday before returning to Major League Soccer.

Everton boss David Moyes had hoped to extend his loan deal but Donovan has been recalled by Los Angeles Galaxy, whose season starts on 27th March.

“When I think of everything at Everton I want to think of the trip as a whole and think that I have been successful,” Donovan told the club’s official website.

“It has been fantastic and I could never have expected when I got here that it would turn out like this.

“The fans want you to play as hard as you can when you are out there.

“That is what I like to give when I am out there and they want to see the team win.”

Donovan marked his final appearance at Goodison with a goal in last Sunday’s 5-1 thrashing of Hull City.
