Ilie Dumitrescu has resigned as coach of Steaua Bucharest after he came in for criticism from the club’s supporters.
The former Romanian international striker was only appointed as Victor Piturca’s replacement six weeks ago but has already decided to quit after coming under fire following a 1-1 draw against Astra Ploiesti.
Pressure also increased on Dumitrescu following last week’s 4-1 defeat to Liverpool in the Europa League.
“I am resigning because I can’t stay in a place where I am not wanted,” said Dumitrescu.
“I don’t think I deserved this treatment from the fans.”
Dumitrescu’s departure means Steaua will begin their search for a 13th coach in just seven years.
