Barcelona’s injury problems were compounded by the news that Edmilson could out of action for around six months.

The Brazilian defender damaged ligaments in his right knee in Barca’s 1-0 win over Numancia on Sunday night.

Edmilson now joins team-mates Thiago Motta and Gabri on the sidelines, both of whom have sustained similar injuries in recent weeks. The injuries have taken the gloss of what has been an impressive start to the new season by the Spanish league leaders.

The former Lyon man will undergo tests on Monday to deduce the full extent of the injury, but if the tear to his cruciate ligament is confirmed he will be out for around six months.

“It is not normal that every two weeks we are getting cruciate ligament injuries,” Barcelona club doctor Jordi Ardevol stated.

Spanish league rules state that clubs are permitted to sign replacements for players struck down with injuries outside the transfer window, meaning the Spanish league leaders could well strengthen their squad in the coming weeks.
