Newcastle United have signed Turkey midfielder Emre Belozoglu from Internazionale on a five-year contract.

The 24-year-old, a member of the Turkey side who finished third at the 2002 World Cup, becomes manager Graeme Souness’s second close season signing after fellow midfielder Scott Parker’s arrival from Chelsea.

“I would like to thank the manager Graeme Souness and chairman Freddy Shepherd for having the trust in me to bring me to Newcastle,” Emre told the club’s website.

“This is a very big club and I am so excited about the prospect of playing in the Premiership.”

Souness added about the international: “He’s much admired in Italy, is a star in his home country and he will be a big success here.

“He’s got fantastic enthusiasm and will be a good all-round player for us.

“He will bring a bit of grit and determination and he is a real flair player as well. “He works very hard, he has been in Italy for a number of years and has obviously learned a great deal of his trade out there.

“He will do well and he is keen to play English football. He sees it as a type of football that will suit him.”
