England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson ie expected to resist the temptation to start Everton’s Wayne Rooney in Wednesday’s vital EURO 2004 qualifier against Turkey.

Rooney emerged as a possible replacement for Emile Heskey, after the Liverpool striker picked up a knock in England’s 2-0 win over Liechtenstein on Saturday. But Eriksson believes the 17-year-old is not ready to start a match of such importance.

“I think Rooney is ready but only part-time,” Eriksson said.

“I don’t think you can expect him to come in and resolve a game against Turkey.” Eriksson said he did not question the youngster’s talent

“He’s physically strong, good on the ball, quick and he scores goals. He deserves to be here and he does not seem to be worried or nervous.

“He might be good enough to start but we’ll see.”

Heskey injured hisknee during Saturday’s win and was replaced by Rooney after 79 minutes. However, the Liverpool player is expecte to recover in time to start against Turkey.

“Both Emile Heskey and Sol Campbell will take part in training on Monday,” an FA spokesman said on Sunday.

If passed fit, Arsenal defender Campbell is expected to replace Gareth Southgate in central defence.
