FIFA have, for the first time, given themselves the power to review red and yellow card decisions by referees.

At the World Cup, a disciplinary committee will have the power overturn any automatic suspensions that arise from the issue of a card for diving.

Acknowledging how difficult it is for referees to spot dives, FIFA’s Volker Roth said: “It has to be 100% clear. We are not speaking about cards for foul play or handling the ball, only about simulation.”

In the past, any player who received two yellow cards or a red card during a game would be suspended for at least one game.
