Fiorentina have signed striker Luca Toni after Palermo accepted a £7.2m bid for the Italian international.

The 28-year-old, who has agreed a four-year deal worth over £1million a year, scored 20 goals for newly-promoted Palermo last season and broke into the Italian national side under new coach Marcello Lippi.

“He was our principal transfer market objective,” said Fiorentina coach Cesare Prandelli.

“He’s scored 50 goals in two years and I hope that he can continue such a strike rate here with us.

“He leads the line and sees the goal like few players do. We instantly agreed that he could be of use to us.

“Talks were lengthy but I think the player’s desire was the important factor behind the move.”
