Former Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini has been called into France’s Euro 2008 squad after captain Patrick Vieira suffered an ankle injury.

Vieira hurt his left ankle on Friday and will definitely miss the opening Group C game against Romania in Zurich on 9 June.

However, a decision as to whether Vieira will play in the tournament at all will not be taken until the last possible moment (June 8), said coach Raymond Domenech.

Flamini, who will join Milan on July 1, was in an initial 30-man squad but did not make the final cut of 23.

“Flamini is arriving today at Clairefontaine (France’s training camp) and is added to the 23-man squad,” team spokesman Yann Le Guillard said.

Le Guillard added that no French player had pulled out of the squad to make way for Flamini, and he will fly with the squad to Switzerland on Wednesday.
