France goalkeeper Fabien Barthez has pulled out of Wednesday’s friendly against Poland because of a knee injury he picked up while playing for his club Marseille.

France coach Raymond Domenech has added Sebastien Frei to his squad in place of Fabien Barthez, who picked up a knee injury while playing for his club Marseille

For Parma goalkeeper, Frei, this is a first international call-up.

“I got a knock on my right kneecap during the (league) match against Strasbourg (on Saturday),” Barthez said.

“There is a bruise. I’m going to start treatment here and go back to Marseille tonight.”

Nantes goalkeeper Mickael Landreau is expected to start against Poland at the Stade de France on Wednesday.

Barthez’s usual back-up, Gregory Coupet of Lyon, strained a thigh muscle 10 days ago and was left out of the squad by Domenech.
