United States goalkeeper Brad Friedel he and his team can leave the World Cup with their heads held high despite their 1-0 quarter-final defeat to Germany.

“We had a great ride and the satisfying thing is that we can go home knowing that we could have even gone further,” said the Blackburn Rovers keeper.

“It’s disappointing, but we were never once played off the park. We can go home with our heads held high.”

“I think we outplayed them at times,” continued Friedel, “but that’s why they are so good. When they are not the best team they can still win.

“We’re still disappointed because we thought we should have won. I think the man of the match was their goalkeeper,” he added.
