William Gallas has defended Thierry Henry’s decision to snub Barcelona in order to remain at Arsenal.

Speculation linking Henry with a move to Barcelona was rife last season, but the French striker opted to sign a new deal at Arsenal.

Several observers including French legend Michel Platini suggested that Henry had made a mistake by staying in England, but Gallas does not share his compatriot’s scepticism.

“Those who say ‘Thierry Henry was wrong not to join Barca, he has lacked ambition’, are wrong,” Gallas told skysports.com.

“We will do everything to prove it.

“This club has ambition. If not, I wouldn’t be here.

“Arsenal directors told me many good words. The future is here. The players are skilled.

“Arsenal are trying to build in order to become one of the greatest clubs in the world. The Emirates stadium is huge, 62,000 people can go to matches there.

“We now have to win titles, the Champions League, The Premiership, in order to show we are one of the best in the world.

“I haven’t reached my best yet, I can progress in some areas of my game. I can score more but I won’t tell which aspects I need to improve.

“I will do everything to succeed.”
