Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is a doubt for England’s two World Cup qualifiers next month.

The 25-year-old midfielder, who is suffering from a calf injury, will probably miss the Supercup final against UEFA Cup winners CSKA Moscow in Monaco on Friday, manager Rafa Benitez has confirmed.

“If he is not fit for Friday it would be dangerous for him to play for England,” Benitez told reporters.

“I need to speak to the doctors but if he is not fit in two to three days it could still be dangerous in one week. I will speak to the England manager (Sven-Goran Eriksson) about it.”

Gerrard suffered the injury in Liverpool’s 1-0 Premier League win over Sunderland on Saturday.

England are away to Wales on September 3 and meet Northern Ireland in Belfast four days later.
