Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has played down reports linking midfielder Steven Gerrard with a move to Real Madrid.

Madrid’s football director Benito Floro revealed on Wednesday that Gerrard was one of a trio of players the Spanish club were interested in signing in the summer.

But Gerrard, 25, signed a new contract at Anfield during the summer after turning down the chance of a move to Chelsea.

Benitez insists the Anfield skipper will stay at the club and said: “The situation is very clear. Steven Gerrard is not for sale.”
