Ghana have omitted Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien from their squad for the African Nations Cup.

Essien, who has been recovering from an ankle injury, returned to training this week, raising hopes that he would be able to play some part for Ghana in the tournament.

But he has been left out of Ghana’s 23-man squad from for the finals being held in Egypt from Jan. 20 to Feb. 10.
