Ruud Gullit has resigned as coach of Feyenoord, following a meeting with the club’s board.

The Dutch legend was replaced Bert van Marwijk last summer but he has chosen to leave because of what he claims is a lack of support from the board.

Feyenoord finished the Eredivisie season in fourth place but 25 points behind champions PSV Eindhoven. At Sunday’s match – a 6-3 win over Den Haag – fans had chanted that Gullit should “leave with his garbage”.

At a meeting with the board on Monday, Gullit is reported to have quit because he wasunable to receive assurances about a transfer budget for the close-season.

“It is always depressing when trainers leave,” chairman Jorien van den Herik told the club’s official website.

“But things didn’t work out at all like we had hoped. There is insufficient faith in a successful co-operation for the coming season.”
