Owen Hargreaves is hopeful that Sir Alex Ferguson will renew his interest in signing him when the transfer window opens in January.

The England international has admitted that a move to United would enable him to be closer to his Lancashire-based family.

Hargreaves’ hopes of a move to Old Trafford have so far been undone by Bayern Munich’s refusal to sell.

The midfielder sustained a broken leg in September, but Ferguson has not ruled out the possibility of a bid in January.

“It would be a dream for me,” Hargreaves told Channel Five.

“My dad’s from Bolton and all his family are there, so, for me, it’s not like Man United showing interest in a German player, there are very specific ties. My family is there.

“To have the opportunity to play for a club like United would be a dream come true.

“I think Man United is one of the biggest and best clubs in the world.

“I was flattered by United’s interest in the summer and I made my intentions clear as to what I would have liked to have happened,” added Hargreaves.

“They thought I would add a piece to their puzzle and, with my local connections, I think I could have added something to them.

“I’m under contract at Bayern but it is important that, when you believe in something, you make it clear and say the things you believe in.

“Although I received criticism at the time in Germany, I believed in what I said and that’s why I said it.

“In my opinion it is important that if you would like something to happen, you see to it.”
