Hertha Berlin have decided not to renew Friedhelm Funkel’s contract in the wake of the club’s relegation to the 2.Bundesliga.

“Hertha and the coach decided on Tuesday not to renew their contractual agreement that was due to run out at the end of the season,” a statement read on the club’s official website.

“Hertha thanks Friedhelm Funkel for his work, even if the joint aim of staying in the Bundesliga was not achieved.”

What a difference a season makes for the Berlin side who were amongst the challengers for the league title in 2008-09 before eventually finishing fourth.

Hertha appointed Funkel on a deal until the end of the season after firing Lucien Favre following their poor start to the season.

But the former Eintracht Frankfurt coach failed to turn things around and has now been relieved of his duties.

Hertha chairman Werner Gegenbauer has confirmed the club are looking to name a new manager imminently and they hope to name the new man this week.
