Guus Hiddink has been handed a six-month suspended sentence and fined £30,000 after being found guilty of tax evasion.

The coach of the Russian national team was accused of evading more than £900,000 in taxes in his native Holland by falsely claiming to be a resident of Belgium in 2002 and 2003.

Prosecuters had sought a 10-month prison sentence but Hiddink was given the maximum fine possible.

Hiddink’s friendship with Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has led to reports that he would replace Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge at the end of the season, although the veteran coach has always denied the speculation.
