A piece of history was made at today’s Club World cup semi-final between Kashima Antlers and Atletico Nacional when a referee made use of the video replay system to award a penalty.

Kashima defender Daigo Nishi was fouled inside the box by Atletico forward Orlando Berrio in the 31st minute. After examining a video replay at the side of the pitch, referee Viktor Kassai determined that Berrio had tripped Nishi and pointed to thepenalty spot.

Shoma Doi scored the resulting penalty kick to give Kashima a 1-0 lead.

The replay system which is being trialled at the Club World Cup, allows referees to stop games to review footage of “game-changing decisions.”

They can also rely on information being fed by video assistant referees (VARs) watching broadcast feeds away from the field.
