Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld has been officially hired as the coach of Switzerland, and will take up his new position on July 1.

He will succeed Kobi Kuhn, who is leaving his post after the Euro 2008 finals in Switzerland and Austria, the Swiss Football Association has confirmed.

Hitzfield agreed to a two-year contract and takes control of the team after completing the season with Bayern Munich.

The 69-year-old Hitzfeld began his coaching career in Switzerland and won two league titles with Grasshoppers before returning to his native Germany.
