Nigeria are poised to approach Glenn Hoddle, with a view to apppointing the recently-fired Tottenham manager coach as their new coach.

Fellow Englishman Bryan Robson was close to becoming the Super Eagles coach late last year but the deal eventually foundered over financial issues.

However, following their failure to win the African Nations Cup, the Nigerian Football Association are targeting the former England boss to succeed Christian Chukwu.

A Nigerian FA source confirmed: “We need a tactician who can mould the team into a cohesive unit, as we saw Roger Lemerre do with Tunisia.

“We are at the exploratory stage. Our next board meeting we will review the candidates.”

Hoddle was sacked earlier this season by Spurs and he has been linked with a return to his fomer club Southampton, although the majority of Saints fans – still angry that he walked out on the club three years agao – oppose his return.
