Glenn Hoddle has pulled out of the race to become the new manager of Southampton.

Hoddle was eager to return to St Marys following the departure of Gordon Strachan but it is understood he felt he did not have the full backing of the club’s board.

Speculation about his return led to protests by sections of the club’s supporters.

Hoddle managed Southampton from January 2000, until March 2001 but earned himself lasting unpopularity with Saints fans when he left abruptly to take over at Tottenham. Hoddle was subsequently sacked by the London club last September after a poor start to the season.

Steve Wigley remains in caretaker charge at the club following Strachan’s departure on 13 February.
