Tottenham manager Glenn Hoddle is still optimistic about the prospect of signing Real Madrid striker Fernando Morientes.

Any deal will ultimately be determined by the fate of Ronaldo. Real Madrid will only sanction Morientes’ departure if the Brazilian agrees to move to the Bernabeu. Hoddle meanwhile, remains hopeful.

“We’re still trying to negotiate a deal and it’s a very difficult one. I know he (Morientes) wants to come, but there are all sorts of added factors that are out of our hands,” said Hoddle.

“I know the lad would come if everything was sorted out, it’s as simple as that.

“I don’t think it’s going to be a financial reason but there are other things that need to be sorted out.

“We’re just in the middle of it and it might happen.

Hoddle has already identified alternatives, if the deal for Morientes falls through.

“It (the Morientes deal) is still on the go and I’m still optimistic it can be done but it’s not simple. There are other people who we feel might be just as good.”
