More than 50 Hungarian fans were detained by police for being drunk or accused of threatening behaviour before and during last night’s UEFA Cup tie between Stuttgart and Ferencvaros.

A police spokesman said: “Various groups of Hungarian supporters were rounded up and kept in our cells until they had sobered up. Visiting fans must learn how to behave in other countries.”

Hooligan trouble was also reported in Basel ahead of the Champions League tie against Liverpool. A McDonald’s restaurant was laid waste and a smallfire started. One Liverpool fan was injured.

In Italy eight policemen were slightly injured along with four fans during clashes between security officers and Greek fans before Roma’s 1-1 draw with AEK Athens in the Stadio Olimpico. Five fans were arrested.
