Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier believes that internationall matches should be played on on Fridays and Tuesdays rather than their traditional Saturdays and Wednesdays to enable clubs to have an extra day with their players returning from international duty.

“We lose our players to international duty because they are good players, when you have players as good as ours then it is inevitable that they play for their countries and we are proud of that,’ said Houllier.

‘But it’s difficult because when they come back, you need a couple of days to get them into the routine again. Some don’t even get back until the Friday.

‘This is why I say that the second international game of a double-header should be played on a Tuesday. That’s because they usually come back on Thursdays and the following day teams are off for their next league game. For us it will be a game at Leeds.”
