Bayer Leverkusen’s injury problems have been compounded by the news that veteran defender defender Sami Hyypia has been ruled out for several weeks with an ankle problem.
The 37-year-old picked up the injury in the build up to Thursday’s Europa League clash with Aris Thessaloniki.
A statement on Leverkusen’s official website has now confirmed that an MRI scan has concluded that Hyypia has suffered a tear to the outer ligament of his left ankle.
The former Liverpool defender is now facing a lengthy period on the sidelines as he aims to return before Christmas.
Hyypia’s setback adds to a lengthening injury list at Leverkusen, which also includes Michael Ballack, Stefan Kiessling, Gonzalo Castro and Renato Augusto.
