Former South Africa international defender Mark Fish has announced his retirement at the age of 31 because of a long-standing knee injury.

Fish was released by Charlton Athletic at the end of last season after suffering knee problems over the past few years.

“I can no longer play to the standards I have set myself and therefore I feel it is time to move on,” Fish said on Tuesday.

Fish played 45 minutes for Ipswich Town for whom he had signed a one-month loan deal this season.

Fish won 62 caps for his country and was a member of the South Africa side that won the 1996 African Nations Cup.
