Hector Cuper’s Inter kept the pressure on Serie A leaders Juventus on Sunday with an impressive 4-0 win over struggling Como.
Gabriel Batistuta, Luigi Di Biagio and Christian Vieri(2) scored the goals in an easy win for the Milan side.
Juventus stretched their lead at the top to six points on Saturday with a 3-0 win over Modena. Czech playmaker Pavel Nedved was the hero putting Juve two up before David Trezeguet finished Modena off with a well-taken goal.
Milan lost ground on the leaders as they could only draw 0-0 at Reggina, despite the home side going down to ten men after the sending off of goalkeeper Emanuele Belardi.
Lazio took advantage of this slip with a fine display, beating Empoli 4-1. Empoli had taken the lead on three minutes through a Massimo Oddo owngoal. Roberto Mancini’s team then took control and goals from Claudio Lopez, Bernardo Corradi, Diego Simeone and Lucas Castroman meant they ran out easy winners.
Parma coach Cesare Prandelli admitted his side were flattered by the 4-0 scoreline over 5th placed Chievo. After goals from Adrian Mutu, Hidetoshi Nakata, Sabri Lamouchi and Alberto Gilardino, Prandelli said: “The result was perhaps too harsh on Chievo. At two to zero Sebastien Frey made a great stop that saved the result.”
The pressure on Roma coach Fabio Capello increased after a 1-0 defeat at Perugia. Fabrizio Miccoli scored the only goal of the game, to leave a jaded looking Roma side doubtful of European qualification next season.
Meanwhile, ex-Roma star Josep Guardiola scored for Bresciato secure a 1-0 win over struggling Torino.
Bologna had veteran striker Guiseppe Signori to thank for their 1-0 win over Udinese. Piacenza won the relegation battle against Atalanta 2-1 with goals from Dario Hubner and Ciro de Cesare.
