Inter president Massimo Moratti has backed his coach Hector Cuper, who has come in for persistent criticism since Ronaldo’s abrupt departure from the club in August.

‘As a coach, Cuper doesn’t need defending,’ Moratti was quoted as saying in La Gazzetta dello Sport daily.

‘I’ll defend him when attacks descend to a personal level.’

Inter have enjoyed an impressive start to the season, topping both Serie A and their Champions League group. But Cuper’s management style has been questioned following Ronaldo’s disclosure that he left Inter because of Cuper.

In an interview in La Gazzetta dello Sport last week, the Brazilian striker said 60 per cent of Inter’s players disliked Cuper.

However, Moratti praised Cuper for the way in which he deallt with the attack.

‘Cuper has responded very well to a difficult moment, with responsibility and professionalism, without sticking the knife in,’ he told La Gazzetta.
