Anghel Iordanescu has resigned as Romania coach after receiving criticism following his side’s draw against unfancied Armenia in a World Cup qualifier on Wednesday.

Romania lost top spot in Group One after a 1-1 draw in Yerevan which handed Armenia their first point in five matches.

“I resign as Romania coach after the result in Yerevan,” Iordanescu told reporters.

Iordanescu has been the subject of intense criticism in the Romanian media since he announced he was taking up politics and running for the ruling Social Democrat Party in this month’s general polls.
