Sunderland manager Roy Keane has admitted that he would be interested in signing Diego Forlan.

The Atletico Madrid striker has been linked with a host of Premier League clubs recently.

He spent a frustrating two-and-a-half year years with Manchester United, but after a move to Villarreal in 2004 he rediscovered his goalscoring touch and has maintained his rich vein of form since joining Atletico last summer.

Keane, who played with Forlan during his time at Old Trafford, has admited that the Uruguayan international would be a welcome addition at the Stadium of Light.

“I think we got linked with Diego last summer as well,” he said.

“As much as I think he’s a top player, I think the priority for us at the moment is to stay in the Premier League.

“We have a few targets which we’ll hopefully bring into the club in the summer, but obviously that will all depend on what league we’re in.

“But we still believe we will be in the Premier League, and if I was told that Diego was available then maybe I would be interested.”

Keane also acknowledged that he expects the battle to avoind relegation to go right down to the wire.

“We’ve got eight games left, and it’s the same for all teams at the bottom – it’s so tight, but I think it will be a brilliant finish for all the teams at the bottom.

“Obviously you want to avoid the drop and it’s a challenge to look forward to because we’re in there with a chance, and like the other teams near the bottom we feel we’ve got as good a chance as anybody.”
