Ledley King’s suffered a groin injury in the 1-1 draw with the United States and is now battling to be fit for the tournament.
King started the game alongside John Terry but was replaced by Jamie Carragher at the break.
He was initially expected to miss Friday’s second Group C encounter against Algeria in Cape Town, but he is now battling to save his tournament.
King was attended England’s training session on Monday morning as Fabio Capello stepped up his preparations for the Algeria game.
But defender did not take part in the session and headed to the pool to continue his rehabilitation, while team-mates Wayne Rooney and Ashley Cole also sat out training.
An FA spokesman said: “Ledley has a groin muscle strain. He will be assessed on a day-to-day basis.”
