Sheikh Abdulrahman Al Khalifa, a member of Bahrain’s royal family, has confirmedthat he is considering mounting a takeover of debt-ridden Premier Leagub Leeds United.

“The Sheikh confirms that he is at an early stage in exploring a number of options to assist the company in its present financial position that may or may not lead to an offer being made for the company’s issued share capital,” he said in a statement issued to the London Stock Exchange.

Leeds, who lie bottom of the Premier League and reported to be £80m in debt, revealed last week that they had failed to agree a rescue deal with lenders.

If no settlement is reached in the coming months the club said it may have to call in administrators.
