Lawyers for three Leicester City footballers held in a Spanish jail on sex charges are hopeful of securing their release.

The trio were charged on Friday by a Spanish judge after three women alleged they were attacked in a hotel room. A second judge will consider if Keith Gillespie, Paul Dickov and Frank Sinclair can be released.

Leicester City’s chief operating officer Paul Mace told BBC Radio 4 he was confident they would be released in the near future.

“We’re obviously hopeful and optimistic (that they will be given bail) and we have always said that we felt it was a matter of hours and days before… we were able to secure their release rather than the weeks, months and even a year that I’ve seen reported.”

The trio can be kept in jail while a trial date is agreed. This can take up to a year.
