Valencia defender Mauricio Pellegrino looks set to join Liverpool on a free transfer.

The 33-year-old has confirmed he would like to leave Valenica side in January, and he could be on his way to Anfield to join his former Mestalla boss Rafa Benitez.

“Pellegrino’s agent has told us Liverpool are interested in the player but the move has yet to Materialise,” said Valencia director Manuel Llorente.

“The player has a contract until June but we have agreed with Pellegrino to allow him to field offers from other clubs and will allow him to leave on a free transfer.”

Benitez has said that he is looking to improve his squad as a whole in the transfer window, and Pellegrino would offer some experienced cover at the back.

Pellegrino has played just a handful of games for the Che so far this term, and has targeted a move to The Premiership to play out the remainder of his career.

Benitez has plundered his homeland since arriving at Anfield last summer, bringing in compatriots Xabi Alonso, Josemi, Luis Garcia and Antonio Nunez.

In addition to Pellegrino, the Liverpool manager is still looking to secure a deal to bring Real Madrid striker Fernando Morientes to the club.
