Liverpool have signed defender Mauricio Pellegrino from Valencia on a free transfer.

The 33-year-old has agreed a six-month deal with the option of a further year.

Pellegrino joined Valencia in 1999 from Barcelona and helped them to Champions League finals in 2000 and 2001 as well as being a member of Valencia’s title-winning sides in 2002 and 2004.

His agent Filippo Cavadini said: “He has passed his medical and is very happy he is going to Liverpool – a great club.

“He has already spoken to Rafael Benitez and is looking forward to playing with Liverpool.”

“Mauricio will now be going to Valencia for two or three days to organise his personal situation before returning to Liverpool.”
