French international Bixente Lizarazu will leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season after failing to agree a new contract with the club.

Lizarazu joined Bayern in 1997 from Athletic Bilbao and has enjoyed consistent success since his arrival in Germany.

The 34-year-old has won four Bundesliga titles as well as the Champions League in 2001.

However, the left-back has decided to leave the club when his contract expires in the summer.

“I have decided to leave Bayern when my contract is up in the summer,” he said.

“I am very proud of what I have achieved here because I won every important title available. I now hope to help another club with my experience.”

Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld admitted the club were sorry to lose the French international.

“We are very sad to see him go because he is a true professional,” said Hitzfeld.
