Sepp Maier has quit as national goalkeeping coach as a result of the current dispute over the number one position.

The move came after Saturday’s 2-0 win in Iran former legend Maier was informed that his services were no longer required.

Maier, who also works with Oliver Kahn at Bayern Munich, mocked Jens Lehman’s claim that he deserved to be the German number one.

Maier said Lehmann might as well “hang himself” as he will not be able to supplant Kahn – the current number one.

His remarks may well have cost him his role with the national team.

Former national goalkeeper Andreas Kopke is now expected to replace Maier.
