Paolo Maldini will be out of action for a week after undergoing surgery to correct a broken nose.

Maldini was involved in a clash with Inter striker Christian Vieri in Milan’s 1-0 win on Saturday. The injury means that he will be ruled out for the Coppa Italia clash against Perugia and the next league game against Empoli.

However, Maldini should be fit for the crucial second leg tie against Ajax in the quarter-finals of the Champion’s League. The tie currently stands at 0-0 after the first game at the Amsterdam Arena.

Maldini recently signed a new two-year contract at Milan and played in his five hundredth league game for the club in the recent 2-1 win against Juventus. Milan are currently second in Serie A, six points behind leaders Juventus.
