Manchester United have been given permission to increase the capacity of Old Trafford to 76,000.

Trafford Borough Council has agreed to proposals to fill in the north-west and north-east corners of the ground, which will extend the attendance by 7,900.

The work is expected to cost United £45m and will be completed in time for the 2006-07 season.

“This will be of benefit to everyone,” said United director Phil Townsend.
